Thank you for taking the time to learn about our mission and programs. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful attention to Family Connections. We are a not-for-profit organization in southeastern Indiana that provides services to clients in Dearborn, Franklin, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland counties.
In 1983, the Ripley County Health Coalition was formed; today it is referred to as Family Connections. Utilizing volunteer physicians, women were seen at a centrally located site in RipleyCounty where they received medical care and a complete range of social services. Unfortunately, in 1984, ISDH was unable to renew the funding and the clinic closed. However, RipleyCounty was unwilling to let go of the Health Coalition. Recruiting volunteers, the agency became a referral source for pregnant women. In 1985, it became clear additional health services were needed for uninsured and/or Medicaid eligible children. Again, capitalizing on volunteers, the Health Coalition began a well-child clinic twice a month.
Family Connections continued to grow and expand its services in the 1990's. In 1993, Family Connections received a grant from ISDH to provide outreach and education to Medicaid families on the value of a Health Watch exam. In 1994, this program, titled Start Healthy, was expanded to provide Prenatal and Family Care Coordination. This program has received national recognition and was picked as a model program for care coordination. In1997, we were showcased at the American Public Health Associations National Conference.
In 1996, Family Connections implemented Healthy Families, a parent support program for families with newborns. This program recognizes parents are the best care provider for their children. Healthy Families supports parents in their efforts to become the best parents possible. This program experienced a major expansion in 1997. With a grant from FSSA and Children's trust Fund, Healthy Families expanded in six counties in southeast Indiana- Dearborn, Franklin, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland. In 2002 Prenatal Substance Use Prevention Program (PSUPP) was added to the programs offered by Family Connections. PSUPP provides assistance to pregnant women at risk for poor pregnancy outcomes due to substance use, including tobacco.
Family Connections has seen many changes since its beginning in 1983. We strive hard to maintain our focus on providing services to our clients. Family Connections continues to live up to its mission statement to insure families are our number one concern.
Our Mission….Through education and advocacy, assisting families in reaching their potential.
